Playing
- How do I find ghosts?
- Go outside and follow the radar. When you are within about 30 m of a ghost, tap Hunt: the camera opens and the ghost floats around you. Hold the vacuum and keep the ghost in the beam until the meter is full.
- Can I try it indoors?
- Yes. Tap Practice ghost on the radar and a practice ghost appears in front of you. After your first real catch it moves to Settings → Practice ghost. It uses no battery and gives no points. Location needs to be on.
- Why does the radar stop when I'm in a car or on a bike?
- Ghosts only show up at walking speed, so the game pauses above about 15 km/h. Never play while you drive or cycle.
- Why didn't my catch give points?
- Practice ghosts give no points. Only your first 80 catches each day score; the day starts at midnight UTC (1 am in Sweden). Catches never score when your phone reports a fake location or the app can't be verified as genuine.
- What are levels and ranks?
- Every catch gives experience points (XP). They add up over all seasons and raise your level, from Novice to Legend. Higher levels make your vacuum suck faster, give you more battery and faster recharges, and unlock new colours for your Spook-Vac in the Spirit Pouch.
- What are items?
- A Spirit Lantern brings more ghosts around you for 5 minutes, a Glow Charm doubles your XP for 5 minutes, a Power Cell makes catch attempts free for 5 minutes and a Seeker's Glass lets you hunt from 60 m instead of 30 m for 3 minutes: use these from your Spirit Pouch. A Wisp Hook pulls one far ghost, up to 100 m away, close to you: tap the ghost on the radar. A Spark Jar makes a ghost stand still for 1.5 seconds, and a Drowse Tonic makes it slower and plays fewer tricks: use them from the buttons during a catch. You find items on the radar (walk up to one and tap Collect, up to 30 a day), sometimes get one after a catch, and can buy packs of 3 of all but the Power Cell.
- What is competitive mode?
- In normal mode, every player can catch every ghost. In competitive mode, the first player to catch a ghost gets it, and it disappears for the other competitive players; if someone beats you to it, your charge comes back. Each mode has its own leaderboards. You choose a mode when you start and can switch any time in your profile; each mode keeps its own score.
- What happens on Halloween Night?
- On Oct 31, from early evening until late at night where you are (it follows the sun, so the clock time differs a little from place to place), twice as many ghosts appear, a legendary Halloween ghost can turn up and catches give double points. The Halloween board shows the night's best.
- Which leaderboards are there?
- Each mode has a Season board and a Tonight board, for the whole world and for your country. A season lasts three months (new ones start on Feb 1, May 1, Aug 1 and Nov 2), and your score starts again in each one. The Tonight board counts today's points, at any hour, and resets at dawn. Your first real catch in a season sets your country for it.
Battery and purchases
- How does the battery work?
- Each catch attempt uses one charge, even if the ghost escapes. You have up to 10 free charges, and one comes back every 10 minutes until you are at 10 again. Your first catch in a new area each day also gives a charge back, if you have fewer than 10.
- What can I buy?
- A Battery refill adds 30 charges. The Super Vacuum gives unlimited catch attempts. In the shop, packs of 3 Spirit Lanterns, Glow Charms, Seeker's Glasses, Wisp Hooks, Spark Jars or Drowse Tonics add items.
- I bought the Super Vacuum on another phone.
- Sign in to the store with the same Apple ID or Google account, then tap Settings → Restore purchases.
- Do battery refills and items move too?
- They stay with the player that bought them. Sign in with Apple or Google, or use a recovery code, to take that player to a new phone (see "Your account").
- How do I get a refund?
- Apple and Google take the payment, so they handle refunds: use reportaproblem.apple.com for the App Store, or your order history in Google Play.
Your account
- Will my progress move to a new phone?
- Yes, if you sign in: tap Continue with Apple or Continue with Google when the game starts, or later in Settings. On the new phone, sign in with the same account and your player comes back. You can also play as a guest and use a recovery code: before you switch phones or reinstall, tap Settings → Recovery code and write the code down, then choose I have a code on the new phone. A code works once; making a new one replaces the old one.
- I reinstalled without signing in or a code. Can you bring my progress back?
- On an iPhone, reinstalling on the same phone usually keeps your account. Otherwise, sorry, no: without a sign-in or a code we can't tell which account is yours.
- What happens when I sign out?
- Your player stays saved with your Apple ID or Google account, and the phone starts a new guest player. Sign in again to get your player back.
- Can I change my nickname?
- Yes. In your profile you can type your own nickname (3 to 16 characters, once a week) or get a new one made for you (up to 5 times a day). Never use your real name. Names are checked against lists of rude words, and no two players can have the same one.
- Someone has a rude nickname, or it looks like a real name.
- Tap their row on a leaderboard and choose Report name; we look at every report. If enough players report a name, it is reset and blocked. To stop seeing it, choose Hide this player; you can show hidden players again in your profile. You can also write to us.
- How do I delete my data?
- Tap Settings → Delete my data. See the data deletion page for what that removes.
Permissions
- Location finds the ghosts near you. "While using the app" is enough. Only an area of about 150 m is ever sent to us.
- Camera shows the ghosts around you. Nothing is recorded.
- Photos (iPhone) is used only when you save a picture of a catch.
If you said no by mistake, turn the permission on in your phone's Settings app, under Wisplight.
Play safely
- Look up from the screen often, and watch out for traffic.
- Stay in public places. Never go onto private property or anywhere unsafe to catch a ghost.
- After dark, play together with friends or family.
- Younger players should hunt with an adult.
